BROOKLYN SUPERHERO SUPPLY CO.

Whenever a friend of mine goes to visit New York I always tell them to visit the Brooklyn Superhero Supply store in Park Slope, Brooklyn.  They usually reply with lines like ”are you smoking crack?” or ”that doesn’t exist you fool.” It DOES exist, bitches. In store, you can buy all sorts of superhero supplies such as; grappling hooks, bottles of chaos and gravity, capes, invisibility paint, jars of anti-matter, secret identity kits, deflector braclets and more. The design of the store features tongue-in-cheek signs set in elegant, clean, bold typography. I love how the staff treat the products as real superhero supplies and customers as real superheros. They even get you to quote a superhero oath at checkout! :)

This concept store is the brainchild of literary Dave Eggers and like all of our favourite comic book heroes – it has a dual identity. In reality, the store is a clever front for the non-profit (youth orientated) creative writing and tutoring centre, 826NYC. To enter 826NYC, you actually have to go through a swinging bookcase in the BBS store. Proceeds from the BBS store fund 826NYC directly to help young people with their creative writing skills. Amazing. Marc Jacobs and Kenneth Cole have both designed crime-fighting outfits for fundraising events here.

Store times: 11-5.30pm

Thoughts?

PS. Dave Eggers will be releasing Wild Things, a novel inspired by Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are, to coincide with the release of Spike Jonze’s highly anticipated fantasy movie release this year. Sick.

Why would it be called Acme though, Davidf? That’d make sense if it were a cartoon supply store serving coyotes and their road runner chasing needs.

    Comodisc,

This IS a franchise, 826NYC is a sister location of the original 826Valencia program, located in San Francisco. Both programs are there to help in tutoring and support in developing creative writing skills in children; which is amazingly awesome. Whats also great is 826 Valencias store front is a Pirate shop! Since then, sister sites have popped up all over the country; some of them having a different themed storefront as well. Seattle has a Space Cadet theme and 826 Michigan is a Robot supply and repair shop! Awesome.

What a bunch of fools you must be to believe in this shit and the crap they sell. If you want to buy a gallon can of gravity, see me I’ll sell ya a 55 gallon drum of it at a much better price.
Think about it… a non profit front, they even indicate it’s a front, for a creative writing and tutoring center for kids. Who the fuck are they bullshitin’. Tell me, what kid in Brooklyn NY is interested in creative writing, Grafitti, maybe but, creative writing? gimme a fuckin break. This scam smells of a Bernie Madoff type scheme. They claim to be non profit to get around paying taxes…that means more of you money going into the pockets of these scammers. Non profit writing center for kids….my ass.
I’ll have to get my good friend Big Mike the Kid from Brooklyn to check this joint out and tell it like it is because I won’t go near the fuckin’ place.
A tip to Phil from Phoenix, do yourself a favor and stay in Phoenix.

The design of this page is great (only in my opinion). The second thing to say is that people wan’t believe until the see (their speaking). But I say believe and you will see. So would you believe of a calm fly. Not? Ok, than you must see it.
My page is not in english language yet, but soon it will be. Have a look!

This is an absolutely AMAZING idea. Having something this cool as a front for a tutoring center is just ingenious! I’m sure the kids want to be there more than they would, say, Sylvan Learning Center or something. They’d feel like they were part of something really, really, badass. And they’d be SO right!I’ve gotta say: kudos. I am impressed.

I took a good friend there when he came to NYC for the first time. I had lived there for a year before I ever read the sign, or anything in it. I always thought it was a hardware store. They are by far one of the coolest organizations in the city.

Hi, I’m a PhD student at Birkbeck, University of London working on a thesis on comics. I’m doing a paper at a conference in Leeds, UK in November and wanted to use one of your splendid images alongside my abstract for the conference booklet. The one I was thinking of was the first one of the store. Is this OK with you? And if so, who should acknowledge as copyright holder etc.?
