Back to the Surgery….

February 9, 2010 by Danny Wood

If you are are unfamiliar with the work of Jonzi D….slap yo self 2 time and do 50 push-ups. Jonzi is actively involved in British Hip Hop culture, rapping and b-boying in clubs and on the street level since the early eighties and runs Jonzi D productions. He recently created and directed the sell-out Hip Hop Theatre piece ‘Markus the Sadist’ featuring Bashy alongside the musical direction of Soweto Kinch and curates the annual ‘Breakin’ Convention’. To put it simply…the man has his fingers in many hip hop filled pies. One of these pies is ‘The surgery’. Hosted by Jonzi , The surgery is a regular showcase of new Hip Hop Theatre work in March, June and October each year. You needs to get yourself down there ya heard. For more about Jonzi D’s Surgery click More below……

It is a platform for emerging and established artists to present new Hip Hop theatre work in a professional theatre space. The unique aspect of the evening is the breaking down of the “fourth wall” where there is an opportunity after each piece to take questions and comments from the audience. For artists trying out new ideas, testing the boundaries of Hip Hop Theatre genre, this is a really valuable opportunity to help decide how they might develop the piece. For audiences, it’s a brilliant way to engage with artists and be part of the development of Hip Hop Theatre. The evening always features brand new work created during Jonzi D’s Hip Hop Theatre Lab and a selection of other work. At the end, the audience is invited onto the stage to do an impromptu workshop with Jonzi. If this sounds like your cup of tea go check it out. You will not be dissapointed….watch out for the interview with Jonzi coming soon where we talk Hip Hop, Spurs and Education.
