Movie Musts
We’ve all been there before. “Doesn’t that remind you of that scene in ‘The Shining’ when he…”, you are cut short mid sentence and your friend replies “I haven’t seen that movie before.” With furrowed eyebrows you reply “Why? What’s wrong with you?” Then one day whilst gallantly running around in circles pointing my finger at my friends who haven’t watched movies they religiously should have, I stopped and saw I was pointing at myself in the mirror. Oh shit, what movies have I not watched before…And so my friends, the quest begins. First on the list -
Trainspotting, 1996 (dir. Danny Boyle)

"Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television...."
“Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Choose fixed-interest mortage repayments…”
“Choose D.I.Y and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning…”
“Pissing your last in a miserable home; nothing more than an embarrassment…”
“To those selfish, fucked up brats, that you’ve spawned to replace yourself…”
“Choose your future, choose life.”
I can honestly say I don’t care for scary movies and really heavy seated genres. So I wasn’t exactly jumping from my seat when I popped the DVD in however it wasn’t as I thought it would be (a la ‘Requiem For A Dream’; really depressing), it was, despite being a bit trippy and disgusting at parts, very humorous. Highlights were, the dope soundtrack, Ewan McGregor’s yellow fitted tank top and the way his character speaks in narrative – “With God’s help I will conquer this terrible affliction” – all the more entertaining, as you can imagine, spoken in a Scottish accent.
Next on the list, ‘The Godfather’ trilogy. Lowers head in shame.
